Forest exploitation and timber cutting
JSC “Solikamskbumprom” is the largest timber consumer and cutter in the Perm Territory. The enterprise’s need for white deal wood (spruce and fir) is about 1.5 million cubic metres per year. To supply wood to its paper-producing facilities, the company has been developing its own timber cutting operations since 1992. Three subsidiary timber industry enterprises, located in the Gainsky, Kochyovsky and Krasnovishersky districts, are structural divisions of JSC “Solikamskbumprom”.
The total area of forests rented by the enterprise equals 937,000 ha with an annual allowable cutting rate of 1.7 million cubic metres, including 1.1 million cubic metres in coniferous forests..
Forest management and exploitation in the rented wood areas are carried out according to applicable forest legislation, the forest management policy of wood-cutting enterprises of JSC “Solikamskbumprom”, principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC).
Currently, subsidiary timber enterprises use 19 modern multifunctional forestry machines (John Deere and Tigercat) for timber harvesting. This allows to cut the costs of timber harvesting and to reduce a negative impact of timber cutting on the environment, preserving the undergrowth and decreasing the damage caused to the topsoil.
Logging operations are carried out in compliance with forest management projects developed by forest management boards and approved by government environmental impact assessment boards.
JSC “Solikamskbumprom” does not cut timber in wood lots designated as specially protected areas, including:
In the total wood supply, the proportion of wood harvested by the company’s subsidiaries exceeds 65%. Purchase of wood from third-party suppliers is subject to presentation of documents confirming legality of supplied wood provenance.
